There are over four hundred thousand people employed in the Sport and Physical Activity sector. The nature of the sector requires a very flexible and varied workforce.

This course has four key learning objectives:

  • To understand the types of work available within the sport and physical activity sector
  • To understand the challenges associated with working within the sport and physical activity sector
  • To understand how continuous learning is key for success within the sport and physical activity sector
  • To reflect on yourself and your readiness for work within the sport and physical activity sector.

4. Understanding Young People: Building Relationships

This course aims to help you to build positive, strong relationships with young people, particularly those who might not be interested in pursuing an active lifestyle.

This course has four key learning objectives:

  1. To understand why your own attitude is crucial to build successful relationships
  2. To recognise the elements of a positive relationship with young people
  3. To understand the basic features of the young person’s brain and how it influences their behaviour and their relationships
  4. To know how to apply the principles of this course to your everyday practice

5. Understanding Participants: Young People

This course aims to help you understand the reasons why young people take part in sport and physical activity and the barriers they face. Each person we work with is different and the worst thing we can do is to ASSUME we understand them.

This course has three key learning objectives:

  1. To understand the motivations of young people to take part in physical activity
  2. To understand and help overcome the barriers young people face to take part in physical activity
  3. To better understand some of the skills young people will require if they want to overcome the barriers to taking part in physical activity

The course includes a short quiz to check understanding of the material.

6. The Birmingham Way

This course aims to help you understand the ‘Birmingham Way’. The Birmingham Way is an approach to tackling physical inactivity based upon a research project conducted by Sport Birmingham informing how to tackle the problem of inactivity in Birmingham.

This course has four key learning objectives:

  1. The ‘Birmingham Way’ and its approach
  2. What motivates people to take part in physical activity
  3. The barriers to making physical activity successful
  4. The importance of skills development in the sport and activity workforce

The course includes a short quiz to check understanding of the material.
