Last week marked a significant step forward in making physical activity more accessible across Birmingham, as the Active Birmingham Anchor Organisations hosted their first Sharing and Learning Event at The Sanctuary in Castle Vale. The event successfully convened a diverse group of stakeholders, bringing together community members, local organisations, and system partners from the sport and physical activity sector to collaborate on strategies to remove barriers to more active lifestyles.
The Anchor Organisations presented key findings from recent community consultations conducted across their priority areas. These consultations highlighted six critical areas where community groups need focused support:
- Event Planning & Promotion
- Community & Influencer Engagement
- Support with Sponsorships & Partnerships
- Social Media Strategies
- Community-centred Activities
- Venue Accessibility
The core focus of the event was to forge local connections and begin developing action plans to address these six priority areas. This targeted approach is vital in the collective effort to tackle inequalities and ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to participate in physical activity.

Knowledge sharing was a core value of the event, as speakers from Sport Birmingham, StreetGames UK, Access Sport, Birmingham United, Fit Fast Academy and Activity Alliance presented. They delivered actionable workshops directly tackling some of the six identified priority areas, providing attendees with practical tools and knowledge.
The event concluded with a moment of well-deserved recognition: the Anchors received awards celebrating their dedicated work and tireless efforts toward the mission of Active Birmingham across the city – congratulations all! (see first image)
