We work with secondary schools to use sport and physical activity as a powerful tool for growth, helping young people build leadership, teamwork and transferable skills for life. By breaking down barriers to participation, we want to make it so every young person has the chance to get involved, feel included and succeed. Through coaching, volunteering and active learning, we support young people to develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of achievement.

Leadership in Action Secondary School Leadership in Birmingham
Leadership in secondary schools encompasses the idea of developing young people’s confidence to contribute positively to their communities. Sport Birmingham encourages schools in developing student leaders through roles such as sports leaders, peer mentors, event organisers and student council representatives using sport and physical activity as a facilitator.
By engaging in leadership and volunteering, students strengthen communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills – attributes that enhance academic success, support progression into higher education and prepare them for future careers. Taking responsibility also builds adaptability, creativity and a sense of purpose within school and their community.
Sport Birmingham Leadership Pathways
In recent years, we have developed and delivered a range of programmes across Birmingham’s secondary schools, each tailored to young people of different ages and priorities. But they all share a common goal: to build confidence, resilience, and self-awareness in young people.
While our education work is becoming more place-based, we remain committed to providing meaningful leadership experiences that help students grow personally and professionally.

School Games overview and contact information
School Games is an exciting nationwide initiative designed to make a positive and meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people through sport and physical activity.
The mission is to put physical activity and school sport at the centre of school life – giving every young person the opportunity to enjoy, learn and grow through sporting opportunities. It’s about creating inclusive opportunities, promoting active lifestyles (including the goal of 60 active minutes a day) and building a movement that delivers real change locally whilst also making a national impact. School Games is underpinned by principles and behaviours to achieve this outcome; these are reflected in the 10 guiding principles.

School Games provide opportunities to get involved, not just as participants, but also in other areas such as leadership, officiating, volunteering and cultural activities. Sport Birmingham supports the provision of the School Games across Birmingham by working with the network of School Games Organisers who run localised and city-wide programmes
