Earlier this month, the iconic Alexander Stadium played host to the inaugural ‘Girls of Brum’ event – a flagship celebration of sport and physical activity aimed at inspiring the next generation of young women across Birmingham.
Led by Sport Birmingham, the city-wide initiative brought together Year 6 and 7 girls from over 30 schools for a dynamic day of inclusive sport, empowerment workshops, and motivational talks delivered by local female role models. The event focused on building confidence, fostering positive relationships, and encouraging lifelong participation in physical activity.
Throughout the day, participants took part in a wide range of fun and inclusive activities facilitated by local sports and community organisations. Activities included tennis, flag football, pickleball, cycling, archery, tag wrestling and rugby, cricket, boxing and badminton.
The Girls of Brum event not only celebrated the joy of movement but also strengthened connections between schools, communities, and local partners – laying the groundwork for a more active, confident, and connected generation of young women.
We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in participating and supporting on the day, in particular Selfridges who donated 500 luxury gift bags for the girls and members of their wonderful team who volunteered on the day. We would also like to thank our other volunteers including those from Goldman Sachs, all of the activity providers: Pure Gym, Davies Sport, The Active Wellbeing Society, Activity Alliance, Spark Active, StreetGames and the Make a Difference team….and of course not forgetting our wonderful special guest Karenjeet Kaur Bains – champion Commonwealth Games athlete and star of BBC!
A big shout out too to our incredible community organisations, local partners, and NGBs for giving the girls of Birmingham such amazing opportunities! Your energy, effort, and good vibes made the day absolutely electric!
